Synopsis

The concept of social change is extremely broad. It is a constellation of change processes in human society in terms of place, time, and context. Because it is so wide, it is guaranteed to be imprecise, speculative, and value-neutral. In this course, we will investigate the processes and patterns of social change and mobility in Indian society. Mahatma Gandhi's ideas and efforts to bring about a nonviolent social change in Indian society will be given special consideration.

In India, the process of social transformation has been conceptualised as a shift of numerous parts of society - structure, culture, institution, philosophy, and so on. The ideological goals of social transformation in India could be described as'revolutionary' in content and 'evolutionary' in technique. The leaders of the Indian freedom struggle envisioned how social structure, history, and tradition, which constitute society's basic state, would constrain the strategies, aims, and techniques of social reform.

Initially, colonialism and indology affected Indian sociology. Following independence, Indian sociology shifted toward indigenization on the one hand, and critical evaluation of Western theories, concepts, and techniques of study on the other. The use of indigenous writings, sources, and observations decreased the Western influence on Indian sociology. The thought of the founding founders of Indian sociology gave sociology in India a multiple and multifaceted focus.
