UNICEF aims to help children survive and thrive during their first two decades of life all across the world. UNICEF and partners are
assisting in the development and implementation of national adolescent health plans, as well as improving adolescent sexual
and reproductive health, including maternal and newborn care, and expanding access to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in
order to eliminate cervical cancer. Adolescence is a significant age group since it is during this time that individuals can gain specific expertise and hone individual abilities in preparation for entry into the mainstream workforce and contributing to economic productivity. It's also a time when important changes in health and health-related behaviours like smoking and substance misuse, hazardous sexual practises, poor diet, and lack of exercise take place, all of which can have a significant impact on health outcomes later in life. Adolescent populations have risen dramatically in recent decades as a result of the effectiveness of child survival programmes, particularly in low- and middleincome nations (LMICs).
